Emergency Dentistry Treatment Process

Assessment and Triaging

On arrival at the dentist’s office, the staff will usher you into the emergency dentist’s office, where the dentist will do an assessment of your child’s dental situation. They’ll assess your child’s symptoms, medical history, and other relevant information. They’ll also take steps to stop the bleeding and eliminate severe pain.

Diagnosis and Pain Management

Next, the dentist will evaluate your child’s dental condition by conducting a series of tests, checking your palpitation, and taking X-rays if applicable. If your child continues to experience severe pain, the dentist might inject a local anesthetic into the affected area to numb it and stabilize the patient.

Treatment Plan and Implementation

After diagnosis, the dentist creates a treatment which they then explain to you as the child’s parent and ask for your permission to proceed. If you consent, the dentist will implement the treatment, which varies depending on your condition. Examples of treatments for dental emergencies include root canals, dental fillings, bonding, or even extractions.

Post-Treatment and Ongoing Care

After treatment, the dentist will furnish you with guidelines, tips, and recommendations for promoting recovery and maintaining your child’s oral health. They may also prescribe painkillers to manage the pain and discomfort after treatment, if applicable. This marks the end of the dental emergency treatment process.

Benefits of Emergency Dentistry

Decreased Risk of Tooth Loss

Emergency dentistry significantly decreases your risk of losing your tooth. This is especially true if you knocked out or fractured your tooth from an accident, fall, or physical sports. Emergency dentistry helps salvage your tooth, so you don’t have to pay for costly restoration options like dental implants.

Prompt Pain Relief

Emergency dentistry offers reprieve for patients in pain following a dental emergency. The dentist will get to the source of the pain and deal with it once and for all.

Round-the-Clock Availability

Emergency dentistry allows for round-the-clock dental care, including during the weekends and holidays. As such, patients don’t need to make appointments, but can instead walk in and receive treatment right away.

What Should I Do If My Child’s Tooth Is Knocked Out?

The first thing to do when your child knocks out their tooth is to keep calm. A calm head puts you in a better position to handle the situation. Next, you’ll want to don a pair of clean gloves before picking up and rinsing the tooth with cold running water and finally placing it in a jar of cold milk. Use a cotton gauze on the affected region to control the bleeding, and position your child to prevent them from choking from the blood. Next, contact the team at Desert Kids Dental for proper emergency dental care.

What is Considered a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any dental issue or complication that needs immediate attention from a qualified dentist. Unlike regular dental issues, dental emergencies can’t wait or they could escalate into more severe issues that are difficult and expensive to treat.
